CADENCE

Solo exhibition for Tim Engelhardt

A collaboration between Radiant Hall Studios and mossArchitects.

CADENCE is a solo exhibition featuring Tim Engelhardt’s artworks from his “Jazz Series”. Based on the intertwined relationship of abstract art with musical expression, the exhibition is essentially inspired by Jazz music and showcases city portraits that depict the relationship between rhythm, painting, and the human psyche.

Curator, March-April 2024

The curatorial approach encompasses ideas related to transition, initiation, and the threshold between different states or experiences. Engelhardt’s work has a fluid continuity with each painting becoming a portal to the next through musicality, dynamic compositions, or dominant chromatic palettes. Painting is perceived as a full-body exercise that leads to artwork enriched in movements that evidence the actual process of the work’s creation. Simultaneously, Jazz music blended with Tim’s thoughts creates a spiritual connection that leads the artist to a meditative state of oneness with his work.

As a starting point, Tim and I selected pieces for the show, trying to convey a narrative or evoke emotional responses. Subliminally, our endeavor was to find a rhythm that harmonized across the corpus of works. The title CADENCE captures this idea. As a musical term, cadence denotes the point at which a melodic phrase comes to rest or resolves. That is exactly what this exhibition is about, a melodic odyssey through the realm of art, wherein each artwork contributes to the culminating moment of repose.

Cadences hold pivotal significance in musical composition as they help to define the end of musical phrases. Whether this exhibition signifies the culmination or inception of Tim's "Jazz Series", we perceive the process of curating and presenting this collection as imbued with analogous significance to the cadences in musical compositions. Visitors are invited to join us in this musical flow and let themselves stand in front of each piece with eyes and ears open wide, as they traverse from one canvas to the next.
